Game 8: 7th Annual Pink Out Game Recap

The Livonia Eagles were at home sweet home, Bentley Field, for the final football games of the regular season this past weekend. The weather tried to sour the mood on Saturday as rain dotted the landscape the entire day. However, there is always a bright light in every darkness and Saturday was filled with brightness. To start, Saturday was the Annual Pink-Out Game. All the players wore their pink socks, gloves, head bands, arm sleeves, shoes, under-roos and eye black stickers to help raise awareness. Kari Juengel and Missy Crespi out did themselves once again by having more prizes than one could handle. Everything was on display, from a gorgeous patio set (with hidden fire pit) to literally a kitchen sink. Even a toilet was in the raffle this year. A television, numerous gift baskets, bicycles, twin sized beds and tickets to the Detroit Red Wings and Pistons were also up for the winning. There was a silent auction for many pictures and wall hangings. And as a result of all the hard work of the people who volunteered, $10,000 was raised for the Shades of Pink Foundation. Once again an AMAZING job! Can’t wait to see how they outdo themselves next year.

Anyone who is on social media has surely run across a little posting where some sports franchise has secretly brought back a serviceperson to their family and the whole scene is met with tears, cheers and high-fives from everyone. Well, those types of events are also heartwarming and emotional for those involved and those who watch. The Varsity football game between the Eagles and Blue Jays this past Saturday started like any other. The players and coaches were all announced and the cheerleaders followed. Everyone stood on the sideline facing the American Flag in the South end zone when the field announcer for the game asked for attention. Instead of the usual direction to rise and salute our country, the people in attendance were asked to face north for a moment. In the north end of the field stood Benjamin Farrington, a member of the United States Navy who has served our country for five years. He recently returned home and unbeknownst to his niece, Blue Jay Varsity Cheerleader Mackenzie Dubrul, surprised her on the field.  To Mackenzie’s credit she raced across the mud in the rain and pounced on her uncle in an emotional joy, holding him tightly as the crowd erupted in cheers. Honestly, an incredibly touching moment for all involved and all that watched.

In spite of all the off-field festivities, there was still football to be played last Saturday. The Eagles Flag team dropped their final game of the season to the visiting Blue Jays, 48-33. It turned out to be a tough season for the Flag squad as they fell to a record of 0-8. However, they were well coached and are well prepared for next season when they move up a level to Freshman football.

With their 20-0 shutout of the Livonia Blue Jays this past Saturday, the Freshman Livonia Eagles have crowned themselves not only WLJFL South Division champions but also claim the title of Livonia City champions! In true dominating fashion the Eagles did not give up a single point to their city rivals this year, winning the games against the Falcons, Orioles and Blue Jays by a combined score of 59-0. Next up for the Freshman squad will be the playoffs as the Eagles begin their quest for a Super Bowl championship.

The Livonia Eagle’s JV team punched their ticket to the play-offs by knocking out the Blue Jays with a 13-6 victory this past Saturday. Both teams finished the season with identical 2-6 records. However, the Eagles hold the tie-breaker due to the head-to-head victory over the Blue Jays.  Congratulations to the JV Eagles! Next up will be their playoff run.

Three big plays by the Blue Jays’ offense combined with five turnovers led the Varsity Eagles to defeat on Saturday, as they fell 21-0 to the Livonia Blue Jays. The loss only affected the Eagle’s seeding in the playoffs as it means the Eagles will be the number four seed to start their drive toward the league championship.

All decked out in pink attire from head to toe the Livonia Eagles cheerleaders were as loud as ever while cheering on their boys. The rain did not deter the girls as they belted out cheer after cheer while entertaining the crowds. Another job well done ladies!
